"Horror fans will get a kick out of this absurd yarn of a high-school hottie-turned-psycho cannibal... And there is enough of those arch, self-conscious comic lines to remind us this is a Cody screenplay."
—Kirk Honeycutt (Hollywood Reporter)

"It's the smarts in the script by JUNO's Diablo Cody that sneak up on you... Fox shows a comic flair that TRANSFORMERS never investigated."
—Peter Travers (Rolling Stone)

"There's a certain kooky, kinky fun to be had with JENNIFER'S BODY, a fem-rage take on campy horror comedy." —(Washington Post)

"With a script by JUNO scribe Diablo Cody that's loaded with gimmicky teen-speak and one-liners... A superior slice of snarky, entertaining escapism."

JENNIFER'S BODY — Explore further:
—> Blu-ray Review by Dean Winkelspecht »
EXCERPT: "Jennifer's Body" should have simply been called "Megan's Body" and spent its running time focusing on star Megan Fox's assets. Let's be honest. Her physical attractiveness is the driving force of watching this film and perhaps the only reason many viewers spent their hard earned dollars at the box office. The "Transformers" beauty is a very pretty young woman, but without the talking robots and a hot Camaro, Fox doesn't have the star power to drive a mediocre film. "Jennifer's Body" bombed at the box office and I don't foresee it having a lot of success beyond a quick surge of curiosity at the rental market for those hoping for an ounce more of flesh with the "Unrated Version" of the film. I'm not sure it demands that attention.

Former stripper Dialbo Cody found fame with her 2007 screenplay for "Juno" and her second script is a far cry from the witty and engaging "Juno." The film was intended to showcase Fox and allow her to become a star and as stated by producer Jason Reitman, "Jennifer's Body" was to speak of female empowerment and explore friendship. Well, the primary stars are female and the character of Jennifer is a real 'Maneater,' but it could be argued that "Jennifer's Body" is a statement of female empowerment through sex. As far as friendship goes, the film's best scene was a heated make-out session between Fox and co-star Amanda Seyfield. That was a nice exploration of friendship that I could have watched go further.

I found "Jennifer's Body" to be one of the least interesting horror films that I have seen in quite some time. As I watched the film, I couldn't help but to think of the far superior 2000 cult classic "Ginger Snaps" that has similar themes, but was more captivating with every frame. "Jennifer's Body" made attempts at current relevance and humor, but I thought of how "Scary Movie" joked about the age of actors trying to pass as high school students and only twenty three year old Johnny Simmons was close to passing as a high school student. Some would have been difficult to believe as college students. The more I watched the film, the more I felt it was a chance to capitalize on "it girl" Megan Fox.

The problems with "Jennifer's Body" are spread across each area of filmmaking. The acting is shoddy and uneven. Allentown native Amanda Seyfield is a better talent than Fox and while she made not have the drop dead looks, Seyfield is a very lovely young lady and has far more acting talent than Fox. Adam Brody portrays the goth lead singer who sacrifices Fox and I was less than impressed with the "OC" veteran on the big screen. J.K. Simmons has a role as a hook-handed teacher and it's hard not to love anything Simmons does, but I still want to know why they felt the need to give him a pirate´s hook for a hand. At least he could have done battle with the succubus with that thing. Fox isn't the worst actress, but she is not a dramatic talent and if it weren't for her looks and body, it's hard to imagine she'd be a lead actress.

The direction and story suffer greatly. Cody struck gold with "Juno," and the only element I disliked with that film was the hokey dialogue that tried to be trendy to a younger audience. "Jennifer's Body" has much of the same problem and the script tries to hard to be hip. While the demonic special effects were quite good, the constant use of levitation was tiresome the very first time they tried it. The film also tried too hard in its rated version to avoid violence. Truly, what is a good horror film without gore, danger and carnage? A gross out moment or two could have helped this film tremendously and Megan Fox splattered with blood isn't exactly something that I'd say is hard on the eyes.

There are better choices out there. Sam Raimi's recent "Drag Me to Hell" is a far better film. The aforementioned "Ginger Snaps" isn't available on Blu-ray, but it's a better film and far more engaging on every count. I suppose if you really, really love Megan Fox, then you shouldn't ignore "Jennifer's Body." For the male audience, there are a couple very good cleavage shots, but what does it say when the only recommendation I can make for a film is to speak to an audience that cares only for how nicely a film's star is shaped? In a MoviesOnline interview, producer Jason Reitman compared "Jennifer's Body" on Blu-ray to the excitement of owning "Nightmare on Elm Street" on LaserDisc. If that was the target for this picture, the aim was more than a little off.

I had high expectations for "Jennifer's Body." I am a red blooded American male and the prospect of the sexy and gorgeous Megan Fox portraying a succubus peaked my interest. I would love to have her look under the hood of my Camaro, but after watching "Jennifer's Body," I am not sure I want the actress to star in any more of my movies. The flaws of this film are not just Fox's acting, but a weak script and unimaginable direction. The Blu-ray is a technically sound release and both looks and sounds great. It is just a shame the film can't keep up. The supplements are better than a bare-bones release and while this release isn't a top notch title, it has been given some love by the studio. I was disappointed by this film and I tend to think that most viewers will be as well. Fox is going to need something more than this to launch her career as a leading actress, but she at least has "Transformers 3" to look forward to.

Rated R for sexuality, bloody violence, language and brief drug use

"There is within Diablo Cody the soul of an artist, and her screenplay brings to this material a certain edge, a kind of gleeful relish, that's uncompromising."
—Roger Ebert (Chicago Sun-Times)

"With a sensibility that mixes playful pop-culture ingenuity with a healthy shot of feminist anger."
—A.O. Scott (The New York Times)

Film Synopsis:
She's evil...
and not just high school evil.

In every school, there's one girl every girl wants to be friends with...
A newly possessed cheerleader turns into a killer who specializes in offing her male classmates. Can her best friend put an end to the horror?

Sexy temptress Megan Fox is hotter than hell as Jennifer, a gorgeous, seductive cheerleader who takes evil to a whole new level after she´s possessed by a sinister demon. Steamy action and gore galore ensue as the male student body succumbs to Jennifer's insatiable appetite for human flesh. Now it's up to her best friend (Amanda Seyfried) to stop Jennifer's reign of terror before it's too late!

With a script from Juno scribe Diablo Cody, JENNIFER'S BODY smashes together horror and high-school comedy. Megan Fox (Transformers) stars as Jennifer, a student whose lithe body hides a flesh-hungry demon. She begins targeting male students, while her friend (Amanda Seyfried, Mamma Mia!) looks on in terror. Jason Reitman (also of Juno fame) produces this film that stars Adam Brody, J.K. Simmons, and Amy Sedaris.

When small town high school student Jennifer (Megan Fox) is possessed by a hungry demon, she transitions from being "high school evil" - gorgeous (and doesn't she know it), stuck up and ultra-attitudinal - to the real deal: evil/evil. The glittering beauty becomes a pale and sickly creature jonesing for a meaty snack, and guys who never stood a chance with the heartless babe, take on new luster in the light of her insatiable appetite. Meanwhile, Jennifer's best friend, Needy (Amanda Seyfried), long relegated to living in Jennifer's shadow, must step-up to protect the town's young men, including her nerdy boyfriend Chip (Johnny Simmons).

As she did in her Oscar-winning screenplay "Juno," writer/executive producer Diablo Cody employs an offbeat writing voice marked by whip-smart dialogue and pop-culture savvy. But with JENNIFER'S BODY, Cody and director Karyn Kusana venture into darker territory, using horror laced with comedy to mine the precipitous terrain of adolescence.

"Horror fans will get a kick out of this absurd yarn of a high-school hottie-turned-psycho cannibal... And there is enough of those arch, self-conscious comic lines to remind us this is a Cody screenplay."
—Kirk Honeycutt (Hollywood Reporter)
