Maybe someone can answer this for me. How does best buy get their HD displays to look almost like they are in 3d? I stopped by my local best buy and was amazed. I have a sharp 46'' 1080p LCD and nothing I have done to it make it even close to looking as good. Is it the new led-lcd's that make it look so good? Is it the settings they use in store? Anyone have any ideas?

Generally there are a few tricks that pretty much all electronics houses use: 1. Set the tv on vivid, 2. Jack up the sharpness a little, 3. Display a Disney animated feature, 4. No direct light on the screens, 5. Put a high quality set next to a low quality set, 6. Limit nearby distractions, among others.

At home it depends how the tv is set up. I recently moved my daughter into a new house. Prior to that she was living in my basement (with son-i n-law) in which they had a 47" Sharp lcd on a coffee table with a lot of jund all around it. Quite frankly, I was not impressed, to say the least. Last weekend, I mounted the set on a blank wall in their new house with no distractions around it (furniture, wires, junk) and I was totally amazed at the difference in the picture which I too thought looked almost 3d. Football games took on a whole new dimension and I can't wait to watch a movie there.

The wall was dedicated to a flat screen in the builder's plan which included a dedicated plug and chase-way for the wires, which he put in the wrong place, but that's another story.

Perception is all in the presentation.

Steve got it right with the way stores lay out their TV's. Keep in mind the Vivid setting on TV's is pretty bright so if you try that at home under normal lighting conditions it would probably hurt your eyes after a while. Besides it it has too much white in the picture so it doesn't really look right anyway.

I also agree about presentation. A friend of mine has a plasma on a stand unit, thing. It has a metal bar in the back to hold up the tv. He had it up against a white wall and it looked ok but then he painted the background some dark burgundy colour and the whole home theatre setup looked so much nicer. Even the picture on the tv seemed different even though he made no changes to the settings. Very cool effect.

I think a lot of it has to do with the contrast ratio. My buddy has a great Sony LCD and when he comes to my house he is amazed at how much depth is in my tv compared to his ( I have an LG). We did a little research on both tvs and come find that the higher contrast ratio (mine) has MUCH more depth to it.

Contrast ratio is a big factor BUT the ratings on some TV's are exagerated so you have to take those numbers with a grain of salt.

I've seen TV's that say 1, 000, 000:1 contrast ratio which is nuts. I realize that's a dynamic figure but my TV doesn't have anything close to that and it still has a better image than those.

Contrast ratio is a big factor but don't let the numbers fool you.

YES... You guys are all right. about the gimmicks and tricks stores use. with the lighting and putting a lower end tv without HD content etc... BUT

If you (original poster) have a sharp aquos, Like I do. Ive noticed Sharp is very lazy releasing new models. or whatever you wanna call it. most of the aquos sets are only 60 hrz, and not that high on the ratio.

I mean, most Sansung models, and they are MANY.. a ton every year... and other sets have a very high ratio, and on top of that, they have extra high dynamic ratio, and all the sets now pretty much have 120 or 240 hrz. Samsung also has tons of settings on screen to adjust the image. SHarp.. well not too great on the settings.

Thats what gives it that crazy/ 3d/ soap opera look. which some hate and some like

This is the same principle used in art and has to do with contrast (not the TV setting).

When you have a TV that is generally displaying bright flashes of light set against a highly reflective color (such as white), it doesn't allow your eyes to focus on what's being displayed on the TV as well as if you have a darker background. When you have a dark background your eyes can take in all of the color that is being displayed on your TV and not be distracted.

This same principle is put into effect when you go to the movie theater. The lights are turned off/down when the movie starts, making everything else around the screen dark, and the sole focus on the screen.

The color of the back ground that a TV is set against doesn't matter as much as the value, or shade of darkness. And, obviously, while a black background would give you the greatest contrast to your TV display, it would not look very nice against most house's white (or white variant) walls. Thus a dark color that will compliment your interior will give you the best of both worlds.
