I used a HDMI switch to compare.
The biggest improvement was the color handling with natural and deep contrast images.
However, the PS3 still does a really good job.

Henning you're right, the picture is better, even on regular DVD's but what I love more is the noticeable sound improvement. I am now using the audio decoders in my Pioneer receiver by setting the BD35 to Bitstream the audio and I noticed right away that it's clearer (not by much but I noticed) and I'm hearing things I definitely did not hear or notice before.
I just tried a few blurays and Toy Story 2 on DVD (I've seen this movie close to 50 times thanks to the kids) and I can tell the difference in picture quality.
Also, I love that my receiver now shows DTS-HD MSTR and TrueHD!
I'm very happy with this bluray player.
