lmao..to be fair this thing had me thinking screw my ps3 as well. it is that good. and eco-friendly.

my observation:
The best picture on a consumer display that i have ever seen. (but i also must mention that i saw this at a high end dealer, where all the sets are calibrated. the panasonic plasma they were using was model # TH-50PZ85. i can only imagine what this might look like on an elite kuro.)

Is there a PZ850 model? I would go for that before the 85 series. A friend of mine picked up the 800 series from last year, and I was blown away with that.

Hi Henning.

Did you compare the PS3 and Panasonic side-by-side? Are you sure there was really a difference in picture quality? It doesn't seem plausible to me that there would be, as all any decent Blu-ray player is doing is reading, and outputting the 1080p signal as is...

Was there any difference in sound, with the player doing the conversion?

I'm looking to buy one or the other, and if the Panasonic really does offer a visual improvement, then that'd really swing it.

Thanks in advance.

henning may be busy...

i have seen both in action but on two differen't sets. if you are a gamer, get the ps3. if not, get the panasonic. the difference between the two regarding picture quality is NOT night and day, because like you said, they are basicly doing the same thing. the thing that makes THIS player stand apart from other standalones is the fact that it matches and may even surpass(just a bit) the ps3 in functionality and performance. the problems with previous standalones such as sluggish response, differen't profile specs.(so on) are gone with this player. this player represents the first standalone EVER to recieve a recomendation(from many experts) over the ps3 for people who don't want to use a game console "housing" as their blu-ray player. recap:

Don't forget about the sony bdp-s350. Its also a very good player with comparable performance.

I wonder how its load times compare?

The bdp-350 loads up in about 20 to 30 seconds upon start-up under normal settings. There is a quick load option that will load up in about 5 to 10 seconds but it consumes more power.

I have a friend that has the BDP-S350. So far he has had one lock up during the playback of Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull. Otherwise he seems to like it. I'd pick the Panasonic though as it gets better reviews.
